Bamberg - House Karolinenstraße 24-26

The aristocratic house of Carl Theodor Freiherr von Aufseß built according to the plans of Johann or Justus Heinrich Dientzenhofer in 1726

The grounds of the noble house of Carl Theodor Freiherr von Aufseß consist of a group of buildings. The main building (Karolinenstraße 26) is a two-storey building made of sandstone blocks with a mansard hipped roof originally built as a detached building in 1726 according to plans by Johann or Justus Heinrich Dientzenhofer.

The house was owned by the nobility for more than 200 years.

Detailed information

Architecture

The simply articulated façade of the main building is accentuated by corner pilasters and finished with a richly profiled cornice. Inside, a three-armed Baroque wooden staircase leads to rooms with richly designed stucco ceilings, probably by Sebastian Binkar from around 1730.

The main building is adjacent to a two-storey building with a gate with the coat of arms of Carl Theodor Freiherr von Aufseß. Adjacent to the gate at right angles is a building with a hipped roof (Karolinenstraße 24), which is brick on the ground and first floors. On top of this is a slightly projecting second upper storey in half-timbered construction dating from around 1700.

The present entrance to the house dates from 1897.

The ground floor has been extensively altered with shop fittings in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Current

The building is currently used as a hotel.
