Bamberg - New Town Hall

Former seminary on Maximiliansplatz, built in 1732-37 according to the plans of Balthasar Neumann by Justus Heinrich Dientzenhofer and Michael Küchel

The three-storey multi-winged complex was built between 1732 and 1737 as a seminary (Maximiliansplatz 3) and suffragan bishop's court (Hauptwachstraße 1) according to the plans of the architect Balthasar Neumann by Justus Heinrich Dientzenhofer and completed in 1937 by Johann Jakob Michael Küchel after a change of plans.

Detailed information

History

The three-storey, multi-winged complex was built between 1732 and 1737 as a seminary (Maximiliansplatz 3) and suffragan bishop's court (Hauptwachstraße 1) according to plans by architect Balthasar Neumann by Justus Heinrich Dientzenhofer and completed in 1937 by Johann Jakob Michael Küchel after a change of plans.

The design of the building was architecturally related to the new Katharinenspital (Maximiliansplatz 1, Grüner Markt 31) of the same period.

The building complex was extensively rebuilt in 1939-1943 according to the plans of architect Peter Keh and extended at the rear with two wings in modified forms. Since then, the building has been used as the New City Hall of Bamberg.

Architecture

The complex stretches from Fleischstraße to Hauptwachstraße. The elongated three-storey plastered Maxplatz wing with mansard roof has 21 window axes with openwork and chamfered window frames. Above the central window of the first floor is the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn. The depicted crown symbolizes the Holy Roman Empire.

The stone pavilion of the auxiliary bishop facing Hauptwachstraße stands as a counterpart to the pavilion of the administrator of the Katharinenspital (Maximiliansplatz 1). In the middle is a portal, also crowned with the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn.

The windows are set above decorated parapet aprons in openwork and chamfered sandstone frames. The windows of the first floor, the so-called bel etage, are topped with a cornice above the lintel. At the corner of the house is a pillar with a vase top which still survives from the walling of the former abandoned churchyard of the original St Martin's parish church. The tract attached to the rear has been added in altered forms.

Current

Currently, the building complex houses the New Town Hall of Bamberg.
